Are you dreaming of a sailing boat to enjoy freedom on the water? Buying a boat, whether used or new, requires a little prior knowledge. Here you can find out everything you need to know about buying, different types of boat and what you need to consider when choosing and maintaining one.
What is a sailing boat?
A sailing boat is a boat that is powered by wind power via sails. The special thing about sailing is the connection between technology and nature - you learn to read the wind and steer the boat accordingly.
How does sailing work?
Sailing requires not only technical skill, but also an understanding of the forces of nature. The main components are the rig (mast, sails, ropes) and the hull of the boat. The interplay of wind, sails and rudder makes it possible to stay on course and change direction. Sailing is both a sport and a relaxed leisure activity that can be practised on rivers, lakes and the sea.
What types of sailing boats are there?
There are different types that are suitable for different purposes. Depending on your requirements in terms of speed, comfort and handling, you should choose the right type.

Flexible financing options for the purchase of your sailing boat
Boat financing allows you to purchase a boat without having to pay the entire purchase price immediately. With flexible financing models, you can fulfil your dream of owning a new or used boat. If you want to organise your use flexibly over the long term, boat leasing is an attractive alternative. You pay monthly instalments and retain the option of returning the boat later or purchasing it at the end of the contract. This type of financing is particularly suitable for new boats and offers a convenient way of owning your own boat.
Equipment for sailors
Some items of equipment are indispensable for sailing. The right sailing clothing, consisting of different layers depending on the weather, protects against wind and water. A lifejacket should be worn on every trip, as it can be a lifesaver even in calm weather. A sailing knife is important to be able to cut lines quickly in an emergency if they get tangled. A multitool allows quick access to important tools such as pliers or screwdrivers and should be carried close to hand. A waterproof duffel bag protects personal items from getting wet and can be stowed away to save space. A waterproof document cover ensures that all important papers, such as your boat licence, are kept safe. A logbook is useful for documenting the trip and can serve as proof in the event of an insurance claim. A waterproof smartphone case protects the mobile phone from water and loss, especially when used as a navigation aid. Chargers and a power bank are necessary to keep the smartphone charged even during intensive use, for example by navigation apps. Diving goggles and a snorkel help to check the condition of the boat under water and carry out repairs. Finally, sun cream is a must, as the UV radiation on the water is particularly intense due to the reflection.
Mooring for the sailing boat
When looking for a berth, it is worth enquiring about smaller club harbours and private facilities, as the large marinas are often fully booked and expensive. These smaller harbours sometimes still have places available, but sometimes require membership, which is usually easy to obtain. It is advisable to consider more remote locations, as the chances are higher there than in the well-known marinas. Enquiries can also be successful with private operators in inland areas. Ideally, you should look for a berth before buying a boat and make sure that the purchase offer includes the possibility of taking over an existing berth. Boat size and draught also play a role: boats with a retractable centreboard, lifting or swing keel are more likely to find a berth even in shallow water.

Maintenance & care for sailing boats
To keep the boat in top condition, regular maintenance should be carried out and maintenance records kept. Manufacturer’s instructions for care and maintenance should always be followed to prevent damage. It is also important to comply with all applicable regulations to ensure passenger safety and environmental protection. Common mistakes include neglecting regular maintenance, failing to check the engine and mechanical parts and inadequate cleaning of the hull and deck. The boat should also be stored properly and abrasive products that could damage the hull should be avoided. A professional boat maintenance service can be helpful if there is a lack of experience or time. Such services take care of engine maintenance, hull cleaning and minor repairs to ensure the boat’s condition. For sailboats, maintenance costs are usually slightly higher than for smaller motorboats, as they often have more complex systems and a larger surface area for maintenance and care.
Here are approximate average costs for typical sailboat maintenance services:
Engine maintenance (inboarder)The regular maintenance of an inboard engine on a sailing boat is usually between 200 and 500 euros, depending on the size of the engine and the complexity of the maintenance.
Hull and deck cleaning
Cleaning and polishing costs between 200 and 400 euros for sailing boats, as the hull and deck are usually larger and more complex to clean.
Rig and sail inspection
An annual inspection and, if necessary, maintenance of the rig (masts, shrouds and stays) costs between 100 and 300 euros. Storing and maintaining the sails can cost an additional 150 to 300 euros.
Antifouling coating
A new antifouling that prevents the growth of algae and mussels usually costs 300 to 800 euros for a sailing boat, depending on the size of the boat and the type of material used.
Annual maintenance contracts
For sailing boats, there are often maintenance contracts for €1,500 to €3,000 per year. These cover comprehensive maintenance work, including engine, rig, sail and hull care.
Insurance for sailing boats
Insurance is essential. It protects you against financial losses in the event of damage or accidents. The amount of the insurance premium depends on the size of the boat and its value. Find out about the different types of insurance and choose the right cover for your boat.
New vs. used sailboats
Both options have their advantages and disadvantages. For beginners or smaller budgets, a used boat often makes sense, while experienced sailors or specialised requirements can make a new boat more attractive.
