Buying a motorboat is an exciting endeavour. Whether new or used, a motorboat brings freedom and adventure on the water. But before you make the right choice, you should consider a few important aspects. Here you can find out everything you need to know about motorboats to make the perfect decision.
What is a motorboat?
A motorboat is a watercraft that is propelled by one or more engines. These boats can be used either as leisure boats, for water sports or as a means of transport. They are characterised by their speed and easy steering, which makes them attractive to both beginners and experienced boat owners. A motorboat differs from other boats, such as sailing boats or rowing boats, due to its mechanical drive. While sailboats rely on wind power and rowing boats are moved by manual power, motorboats offer constant and independent power that allows them to cover longer distances faster and more efficiently. Motorboats are also more flexible in terms of where they can be used, as they can be operated independently of wind or current conditions, whereas sailing boats or rowing boats are more dependent on natural conditions. This independence from wind and currents makes motorboats particularly interesting for people looking for fast, uncomplicated transport on the water. What types of construction are there?
There are two basic design principles for motorboats: displacement and planing.Boat type

Strengths
Weaknesses
Displacement boat
They displace the water due to their special hull shape and do not float on the surface.
- Stability on the water
- Less fuel consumption
- Suitable for long journeys

Planing boat
They lift out of the water at higher speeds and glide over the surface.
- High speed

- Higher fuel consumption
- Requires more engine power and is less stable at low speeds

What types of engines are available for boats?
Motorboats are equipped with different types of engines, depending on the size and intended use of the boat.An inboard is an engine that is mounted entirely inside the boat, usually in a special engine compartment. This type of engine is particularly suitable for larger boats, as it makes better use of the space in the boat and therefore enables compact and safe integration. Inboard engines are often found in yachts, cruise ships and larger leisure boats, as they offer higher performance and minimise the space required outside. By placing the engine inside the boat, the centre of gravity of the boat is optimised, resulting in better stability and driving control.
An outboarder is an engine that is mounted on the outside of the stern of the boat and is particularly easy to maintain and replace. It is often used on smaller boats such as inflatable boats, fishing boats or sailing boats, as it is compact and relatively easy to operate. Outboards also offer high manoeuvrability and can be quickly removed if necessary. Depending on the model, they are available in different power ratings and fuel types, such as petrol or electric, which makes them very versatile.
The Z-drive combines the advantages of inboard and outboard engines and is often used in sports and leisure boats. The engine is located inside the boat, while the drive unit is located outside at the stern. This design offers better weight distribution and therefore a stable position in the water, which increases driving comfort. The Z-drive can also be swiveled, which means the boat can be steered very precisely.
Motor yacht vs. motor boat
The term motor yacht is often used as a synonym for a motorboat, but there are differences. A motor yacht is generally larger, more luxurious and designed for longer stays on the water. It offers more living space and comfort. A motorboat, on the other hand, is more compact and is well suited for day trips or short cruises. What types of motorboats are there?

Disadvantages
A small, often open boat.
Good stability, plenty of storage space, with holders for fishing accessories.
Mostly low speed and less comfortable for long journeys.
A fast boat, well motorised, with a hull shape that allows high speeds.
High speed and manoeuvrability.
Higher fuel consumption and less storage space.
Boat with sleeping and storage facilities, ideal for longer trips.
Provides sleeping accommodation and protection from the weather; ideal for weekend trips.
Usually heavier and slower; higher maintenance costs.
Small motorboat with cabin, suitable for day trips on lakes or coastal waters.
Comfortable equipment for short trips; good price-performance ratio.
Limited sleeping facilities; less suitable for rough water.
Large motorboat with cosy interior, ideal for slow river tours.
Offers full living comfort with kitchen, bathroom and sleeping area; ideal for families.
Slow and difficult to manoeuvre boat; high operating costs and berth requirements.
Flexible financing options for the purchase of your motorboat
Boat financing allows you to purchase a motorboat without having to pay the entire purchase price immediately. With flexible financing models, you can fulfil your dream of owning a new or used boat. If you want to organise your use flexibly over the long term, boat leasing is an attractive alternative. You pay monthly instalments and retain the option of returning the boat later or purchasing it at the end of the contract. This type of financing is particularly suitable for new boats and offers a convenient way of owning your own boat.Motorboat equipment
The equipment on a motorboat varies depending on the type and size. Standard equipment includes safety equipment such as life jackets, navigation lights and fire extinguishers. Larger boats often also offer navigation systems, autopilots, comfort cabins and kitchen areas.Mooring for the motorboat
When looking for a berth for motorboats, it can make sense to turn to smaller club harbours and private facilities, as larger marinas are often full and expensive. In smaller harbours, there are occasionally places available, but some of these require a membership, which is usually easy to acquire. It is advisable to consider more remote moorings, as availability can be higher here than in busy marinas. It is also worth making an enquiry with private operators in inland areas. It is best to clarify the mooring situation before purchasing the motorboat and check whether the purchase offer may include taking over an existing mooring. With motorboats, size and draught play a role: smaller motorboats with a shallow draught often find a suitable berth in shallow places.Fuel supply for motorboats
Motorboats can be divided into planing and displacement boats, which differ greatly in their driving style and fuel utilisation. Planing boats travel at high speeds on the surface of the water and require powerful engines, which are usually powered by petrol or diesel. This leads to comparatively high fuel consumption, which has an impact on the environment as fossil fuels cause emissions. Displacement vessels, on the other hand, move more slowly and do not glide over the water but displace it, resulting in lower fuel consumption and less environmental impact. Newer technologies are increasingly focussing on more environmentally friendly propulsion systems, such as electric motors, which are emission-free and quiet. Electric drives are particularly advantageous on lakes and in sensitive waters, where environmental regulations are often stricter. Hybrid drive systems that combine fossil and electric energy are also becoming increasingly popular, as they increase range and reduce emissions at the same time. The disadvantage of electric drives is currently still their limited range and charging infrastructure, although these are constantly improving.Insurance for motorboats
Insurance protects you against financial risks that may arise from accidents or damage. The insurance premiums depend on the size and value of the boat. Consider which insurance benefits are important for your boat.New vs. used motorboats
Criterion
Buy new motorboat
Buy used motorboat
Acquisition costs
Higher costs due to the new price and modern technology.
Cheaper to buy; often a large selection in different price ranges.
Maintenance costs
Initially lower maintenance costs, as the parts are new and rarely defective.
Higher maintenance costs possible as components may be worn out.
Warranty
Manufacturer’s warranty of usually 2-5 years.
No warranty unless purchased through a dealer with a warranty.
Technology
The latest technologies, modern equipment and economical engines.
Older equipment and technology, but can often be upgraded by retrofitting.
Individualisation
Free choice of equipment and extras according to your own wishes.
Fewer customisation options; selection limited to existing models.
Amortisation
The boat loses most of its value in the first few years.
Lower impairment because most of the depreciation has already taken place.
Availability
May involve waiting time, especially for special models.
The boat is immediately available and ready for use, no waiting time.
Investment
Greater loss of value in the early years, significantly lower resale price.
Stable resale value for well-maintained, sought-after models.
