Like a small IMOCA: the First 27 SE is ideal for active sailors!
After the then newly established Seascape shipyard launched the First 18 SE (which was still being produced) - the shipyard set its sights on offering a larger boat for sale. Once again, shipyard founders Andraž Mihelin and Kristian Hajnšek reached out to the renowned racing yacht designer Sam Manuard. Although Manuard typically designed IMOCA racing yachts and worked on much larger projects, he agreed to create an 8-metre boat for the two Slovenians. The goal was clear: to deliver maximum sailing performance reminiscent of a small IMOCA, while also ensuring simple cruising comfort, true to the Seascape philosophy.
Since then, the shipyard has sold almost 250 units. Even after the start of the joint venture between Seascape and BENETEAU in 2018, the yacht, which has since been renamed First 27 SE, is still for sale and has been joined by an intriguing sister, the First 27. More details on this to come.
Seascape and First models from the 27 series are for sale on the used boat market from time to time. If you are interested, you should take a close look and try not to get hold of a tired racing boat. We will go into the critical points of this sailing boat later in the article.
Like all Firsts a new First 27 SE is considered to be a premium investment: a well-equipped yacht, including a trailer, can easily be listed for sale at around 200,000 euros. This price reflects the boat’s advanced production techniques, high-quality fittings, winches and sail equipment, as well as the full carbon rig. It is pleasing to note that used First 27 SE yachts do tend to retain their value, consistently achieving good resale prices in the used boat market.
The concept of the First 27 SE: fun offshore racing for everyone
Just like every Seascape - now First model - the First 27 SE is designed to deliver outstanding sailing enjoyment paired with exceptional performance - and it does! The yacht, which weighs just 1,600 kilograms, starts to plane at speeds of around 7.5 knots and it’s speed capabilities are truly impressive. There are numerous reports and online videos on platforms such as YouTube showing the boat surfing at over 20 knots, while typical sailors can comfortably achieve planing speeds between 13 and 15 knots under gennaker.
The remarkable aspect of the boat is that it never feels overpowered. A 610-kilogram lead bulb mounted on a substantial 2-metre hydraulic keel, ensures stability even in challenging conditions like the notorious Baltic Sea chop. Aggressive wave impacts are effortlessly absorbed by the boat with the energy channelled into forward motion, with any excess energy released through the square-top mainsail, maintaining both balance and performance.
The First 27 SE for sale delivers effortless sailing enjoyment. Its tiller steering, paired with twin rudders, offers exceptional direct control encouraging you to maintain a steady course. The traveller spans the full width of the cockpit, allowing for precise mainsail trimming. With this setup, you’re free to simply enjoy yourself and stay active on the water. With the First 27 SE you’re buying not just a boat, but a dynamic sailing experience.
Light-weight, powerful hull and lots of ballast = power!
Manuard’s hull design is fundamental to the First 27 SE’s performance. The boat features a flat hull, which accelerates planing, yet it avoids excessive width. At 7.99 metres in length and and just 2.54 metres wide, it strikes a balance that benefits both sailing performance and practical considerations like berthing fees and winter storage costs. Manuard has achieved an optimal compromise — maximum width for planing efficiency and a narrow hull with a sharp bow for superior downwind handling. Unlike other planing boats in its class, the First 27 SE excels on downwind courses, offering sailing qualities and comfort that models like the Pogo or Dehler 30 OD can only aspire to.
The tall rig, with nearly 47 m² of sail area, delivers powerful propulsion and ensures the First 27 SE remains sailing even when other boats must resort to their engines to keep moving. Its light wind performance is exceptional, even without deploying the gennaker. However, once the gennaker is set, there’s no stopping it. Even in moderate winds, the boat accelerates quickly and planing becomes the norm. Gennakers can remain hoisted in up to 20 knots of true wind speed, provided that the forces are efficiently dissipated through the mainsail which should always be set. The First 27 SE is supplied from the shipyard without any aft or backstays, making proper load distribution via the mainsail essential for safe and optimal sailing.
All of these features consistently push the boat into exhilarating territory, making it a favourite among a diverse group of enthusiasts, from families seeking relaxed outings to hardcore racers.
BENETEAU First 27 for sale - hull, construction, design and sail plan
Fine vinyl ester and vacuum infusion: the First 27 SE has it all
Unlike many traditional GRP boats, the First 27 SE is not constructed from polyester, nor are its fibreglass layers placed in the molds by hand. Instead, it adopts a racing yacht approach with the entire hull and deck vacuum-infused, a process that uses less resin and fibreglass while maximising strength and minimising weight. Rather than a typical balsa wood sandwich core, the shipyard uses high-performance rigid foam cores — materials generally used in the construction of racing yachts. Although the use of vinyl ester increases the purchase price, the result is a hull that is exceptionally light, rigid, and resistant to osmosis.
Any element that adds weight without serving a function has been deliberately excluded from this boat. You won’t find decorative panels, panelling, or anything included just for style. The few interior features that are included are all designed with a clear purpose in mind such as the lightweight table in the compact saloon which doubles as a cockpit table, or the practical nets along the benches, the bars of which help reinforce the boat’s structure. The distinctive- magnetic folding doors that be used to separate the toilet compartment or saloon from the foredeck — are genius innovations. Equally clever is the large gennaker rack opposite the toilet: it’s both practical and stylish.
Does the First 27 SE have a toilet? You bet it does!
You read correctly — the compact First 27 SE is available with a fully equipped pump toilet installed on the forward bulkhead. This toilet can be completely separated from both the forward berth and the saloon using the innovative magnetic folding doors. Designed in ultra-light PVC, just like those found on racing yachts, it also features a CE-compliant 30-litre black water tank with a bottom valve. For many sailors, this is a major advantage of the First 27 SE compared to its smaller sibling, the First 24 SE, While practical dry toilets are now available for sale, many skippers still consider a proper toilet is essential. On the other hand, the First 24 SE delivers nearly identical sailing performance and is only slightly smaller, significantly more affordable — making it a compelling alternative.
The First 27 SE: more than its aluminium counterpart the First 27
If the First 27 SE (originally known as the Seascape 27) is regarded as the true original boat and BENETEAU took the concept a step further in 2022 by introducing a version with enhanced seaworthiness. Unlike the aluminium versions of the First 14 SE and the First 24 SE which have seen only modest sales, the First 27 (without the SE designation) is particularly noteworthy because it’s an entirely different boat!
Apart from the rigging, which is also for sale in carbon for the First 27, the most noticable difference is that this model finally features an inboard engine as standard. The engine on the SE version - being purpose-built for racing – is treated as an afterthought: you’re limited to using either a 9 hp Tohatsu outboard or buying a Torqeedo electric motor. Both options are deployed through an opening in the hull for mooring and setting off, a process that may feel awkward at first but soon becomes second nature for most skippers. While underway, the engine is stowed under the cockpit floor. In contrast, the First 27 is equipped with an inboard 14 hp Yanmar twin-cylinder diesel engine that starts at the push of a button — an very practical feature for navigating the shallow waters of the Baltic Sea.
Below deck, the First 27 offers a noticeably brighter and more inviting atmosphere. Unlike the SE version, which features only two narrow hull windows, the aluminium model is equipped with windows in the superstructure reminiscent of the First 24 SE which flood the interior with natural light. The transformation doesn’t stop there. BENETEAU has removed the bulky centreboard box and large hydraulic ram that are found in the SE. Instead, the 27 has a stylish fixed keel with a lead bulb mounted under the hull.
This makes the First 27 an attractive alternative for sailors who want to sail fast but who are not focused solely on winning races. It’s ideal for those seeking a compact, trailerable yacht that is also a cruising boat. The interior of the First 27 features a notably brighter and more inviting cabin, providing enhanced comfort and making it especially well-suited for family outings and relaxed sailing adventures.
Unfortunately BENETEAU discontinued production of the First 27 in 2026. It appears that customer preferences have spoken, and now only the original SE variant is still available for sale from new. If you come across a First 27 on the used boat market, it’s definitely worth taking a closer look.
Full carbon and laminate sails - for those who want to know more
The defining feature of the First 27 SE is its sailing performance. On deck is a premium full carbon fibre mast which is protected with a coat of clear varnish. Special attention has been paid to the appearance of the carbon fibre with the mast, boom and bowsprit all elegantly crafted to stand out.
As is customary with First boats, the equipment features premium materials throughout. Winches, cranks, rollers, and clamps are all sourced from leading suppliers. BENETEAU typically provides robust Robline lines for the running rigging, although some boats are also available for sale with high-performance Gottifredi Maffioli lines. The 2:1 Dyneema halyard supports a high-quality North Sails laminate sail, while earlier models (those built up to 2021) were equipped with equally premium One Sails laminate sails.
The First 27 SE stands out as one of the rare production boats capable of winning races as delivered from the shipyard. The model is consistently seen winning events like the Silverrudder, and it seems inevitable that a First 27 SE will eventually make a successful transatlantic crossing.
Mobile thanks to its lifting keel and trailer
First boats for sale are highly valued for their exceptional mobility. The lifting keel — which is operated by a hydraulic hand pump as standard, or optionally by an electro-hydraulic system at the touch of a button — can be retracted, resulting in an ideal loading height for transporting on a trailer using your own towing vehicle. This makes it easy to move the boat to new sailing areas. It is essential that the First 27 SE never rests on its keel. The shipyard provides precisely fitted GRP moulded supports, known as ‘cradles’, which are mounted on the trailer. The First 27 SE must only be positioned and transported on these cradles, and strictly at the designated support points, to prevent damage to the hull and ensure safe transport.
The Slovenian brand LOK and the German brand Harbeck are suppliers of trailers for sale. LOK is not certified in Germany, which you should keep in mind. We would advise you to buy a customised Harbeck trailer anyway, as the Bavarian family business has been manufacturing trailers for Seascape/First boats for a very long time.
Rigging and de-rigging of the First 27 SE is also quick and easy with the mast ready in half an hour. However, the First 27 SE can no longer be slipped and the mast can no longer be raised without a crane as the boat is already too big for that. Nevertheless, once in the water, the shrouds are quickly set and the sails hoisted - and you can explore the new sailing area.
The First 27 SE for sale - it's a great cruising boat!
You shouldn’t hesitate to buy the First 27 SE if you are looking for a comfortable cruising yacht for sale as even the racing version is perfect for relaxing trips. The forward berth provides ample space for two adults, while two further adults can sleep in proper quarter berths aft. If necessary, two more crew can be accommodated in the saloon. Hot drinks such as tea, or coffee or even a a one-pot meal can be made safely and easily while travelling - even in rough weather - using a gimballed single-burner gas stove that can easily hold a kettle.
Some First 27 owners have installed an optional mini-galley on their boats. This is located opposite the toilet and is not very practical. If you come across a used First 27 for sale with this setup, its wise to invest in some quality knee pads or remove this awkward feature straight away.
The First 27 SE can be bought with built-in coolers, and some boats even come with beautiful, custom-made cockpit cushions. A suntent can be provided by the shipyard that attaches to the lazy bag to provide shade. Whether you're sailing alone, as a couple, or with a child, the First 27 SE is a fantastic boat for experiencing micro-cruising while still enjoying a good amount of speed.
Looking for more comfort? Take a look at the competitors from Sunbeam or Bente that are for sale. When it comes to sailing performance, it’s hard to find a true rival to the First 27 SE within its size category.
“A real eye-catcher: flat, fast and stylish. The First 27 SE is already a modern classic, and we hope it will be available for sale for many years to come – continuing to set the tone in the small boat sector, both in regattas and cruising.”BENETEAU First 27 for sale - all the information skippers and sailors need
It sails like a bat out of hell – but safely
We’ve already mentioned it: the First 27 SE stands out in the 8-metre class as one of the few boats truly engineered for fast planing, needing surprisingly little wind to break free from its own stern wave. It requires only a modest breeze to begin planing and is capable of planing even with the standard sail configuration. Depending on how the boat is loaded and trimmed, it typically needs only 7.5 knots of speed to initiate planing. This impressive efficiency is why the manufacturer does not offer a Code 0 sail for this model - the rig is already highly effective, delivering strong performance even in light wind conditions.
For downwind sailing, you can deploy either an A2 or A3 gennaker. The choice depends on your desired speed: opt for the smaller, sturdier gennaker for reliability, or use the masthead balloon for maximum power. Both options transform the boat into a distance-eater or mile muncher on broad reaches and downwind courses, easily achieving double-digit speeds to cover more than 240 nautical miles in a day. Even novice sailors have reported reaching 15 knots with ease.
Thanks to its low centre of gravity provided by the 2-metre canting keel, the First 27 SE maintains excellent stability and is still comfortable sailing with a moderate heel, but it’s not designed for extreme angles with the rail submerged. When a gust hits, the square-top mainsail will efficiently spill excess wind, allowing the boat to quickly right itself. The First 27 SE is also engineered to resist common issues like sun damage and other typical quirks found in less robust designs. Choosing the First 27 SE means investing in a boat that’s not only forgiving and confidence-inspiring for those learning to sail, but also an ideal platform for taking your first successful steps into the vibrant world of regatta racing.
What to look out for with a used First 27 SE for sale?
With fewer than 250 units sold over 15 years, the First 27 SE has gathered a dedicated community and maintained consistent production standards. Early models, branded as Seascape, have often changed hands once or twice with owners typically listing their First 27 SE for sale when they move up to higher-performance boats. If you’re considering purchasing a used First 27 SE, pay close attention to several critical areas. Inspect the canting keel box and engine compartment for signs of flooding; check beneath the cockpit floor where the rudder linkage and autopilot are mounted for any collision damage to the rudder; and examine the canting keel and hydraulic system, focusing on the bolts and suspension for evidence of any impacts. Assess the deck for softness, especially around the mast base, and carefully inspect the bowsprit lead-through in the foredeck, as water ingress can here occur over time.
Be sure to inspect the carbon fibre rig carefully for any signs of impact damage, paying particular attention to the spreaders and spreader mounts.
