How Can a Yacht Hit Rocks Clearly Marked on Seamaps? Monte Carlo Crash Sparks Debate

When a 39-metre luxury motor yacht worth €4.9 million crashes into rocks that are clearly marked on every navigation chart, people start asking the obvious: How is this even possible?

That’s exactly what happened a few days ago off the coast of Aspat Castle in Bodrum, Turkey. The Dutch-built yacht Monte Carlo, known for its Ralph Lauren design and offered for charter at €82,000 per week, hit the Köçek Shoal - a well-documented hazard near Karaincir-Aspat - while en route to Didim. Thankfully, all seven people on board, including passengers and crew, escaped unharmed. The yacht, however, was not so lucky.

So, what went wrong?
While the official cause is still “under investigation,” seasoned sailors and local yachting circles are already sharing their theories:
1. The Tired Captain Theory
Many speculate that the captain was simply exhausted. In peak summer season, yacht crews often work long hours, jumping from one charter to another with little rest. Fatigue dulls judgment and slows reaction time - something you don’t want near shallow reefs.
2. “I Know These Waters” Syndrome
This theory points to overconfidence. Some captains, especially those who’ve spent years in Turkish waters, may trust their memory more than their navigation instruments. It’s not uncommon for a skipper to skip the chartplotter, assuming they know every rock by heart - until they don’t.
3. The Owner Was at the Helm
There’s chatter that the owner or a guest may have been at the wheel. While guests love the thrill of "driving the yacht," ultimate responsibility still lies with the captain. If someone else was steering, the captain should have been doubly alert.
4. The Bodrum Marina Conspiracy (a joke, but with bite)
One of the more humorous comments circulating online is: “With Bodrum’s marina fees so high, maybe they wanted to land somewhere cheaper - like the rocks.” A joke, sure - but also a nod to how expensive docking in Bodrum has become in recent years.

A Recurring Problem
What makes this incident more frustrating is that it’s not the first. Köçek Shoal is infamous. Despite being clearly marked on charts and visible in satellite images, it continues to claim yachts year after year.
