The holiday yacht: the BENETEAU Oceanis 52 is close to luxury class
2025 marked a pivotal year for French market leader BENETEAU. The industry was facing a crisis with all large-scale manufacturers struggling in a severely shrinking market, especially in the small and medium segments. Large yachts were expected to pull the industry out of the doldrums as sales figures for boats over 50 feet remained very good. However, instead of adopting an austerity policy and waiting it out, the shipyard invested across the board. The sailing boat portfolio was expanded to include a new 13-metre cruising yacht, the Oceanis 47, and the launch of the new 15-metre yacht was brought forward. Together with its sister model, the Oceanis 52 heralds the arrival of the brand-new, eighth generation of the world’s most successful cruising yacht series. For customers and sailors, this means the opportunity to purchase a completely redesigned yacht, an exciting development that is already generating anticipation…
Reduced price: the Oceanis 52 presents a clear challenge for the competition!
However, BENETEAU is also doing more than simply offering the usual appealing introductory prices. Until now, the basic version of the Oceanis was reasonably well equipped at the base price, but customers almost always needed to purchase one of the large ‘extra' packages to enjoy comfortable features and improved equipment. These packages bundled a lot of equipment, including amenities that really should be standard on a holiday cruiser, not optional extras. The strategy was clear: the base price appeared very attractive at first glance, but in reality, it quickly increased once essential upgrades were added. Incidentally, this approach isn’t unique to BENETEAU; many yacht manufacturers enhance price tags at boat shows in a similar way.
In France, the approach to pricing for the new Oceanis 47 and Oceanis 52 has changed – at least for the time being. A comprehensive trim level is now included in the standard equipment on these models. This means buyers benefit from a true ‘sail away’ price - which effectively represents a price reduction with new owners receiving more features for the same money. At the time of writing, the Oceanis 52 is the most attractive boat for sale from all series manufacturers in terms of budget as it is the best-equipped 15-metre yacht. What’s more, while prices for new models typically increase each year, BENETEAU has chosen to maintain 2024 and 2025 pricing levels for the latest generation of cruising yachts. It is obvious that this strategy fits perfectly into the context of a boat market under pressure.
High comfort: the Oceanis 52 has a whopping 30% more lounge area!
While an attractive price is always welcome, it would be disappointing if that were the only attractive feature of this new yacht for sale. The Oceanis 52, even more than the Oceanis 47, is purpose-built for holidays, luxury and a dream yachting experience. Thanks to its diamond shape cockpit and numerous thoughtful details, the completely redesigned cockpit offers an incredible 30% more space for relaxation, sunbathing, and enjoyment compared to its predecessor - the French designers take particular pride in the cockpit’s layout and design. This also marks a shift in the overall character of the new Oceanis: whereas previous models have been consistently geared towards active sailing, sailing fun, and classic cruising in fair-weather regions, the Oceanis 52 now also aims to appeal to pleasure sailors and guests seeking a luxury holiday.
Always in tune with sailors – thanks to Seanapps!
BENETEAU has been installing its proprietary tracking and vessel management system, Seanapps, as standard on all its boats of 24 feet and above since 2020. This small, unobtrusive ‘black box’ transmits both static and dynamic data via the GSM mobile phone network. The information is processed by a central computer and made accessible to the owner through an app and with their consent, also to the relevant dealer and shipyard. For owners, this means greater control (no more deeply discharged batteries for example) and enhanced security (burglary protection and fire alarms). For the shipyard, it means… data, data, data!
For the first time, real user data played a more influential role in the development process than the traditional reliance on renowned designers’ ideas. BENETEAU has now discovered – based on this user data – that owners spend less time actively sailing than previously assumed and instead much more time at anchor, enjoying life onboard. Extensive surveys with dozens of buyers combined with the brilliant ideas from designers, ultimately shaped the Oceanis 52; a model offering greater luxury and comfort, precisely tailored to what most customers now expect from a new yacht for sale.
BENETEAU Oceanis 52 for sale – hull, construction, design and sail plan
Modern production of a large-series boat: proven methods for the Oceanis 52 for sale
When you place them side by side, you only notice the differences at second glance, or perhaps even the third glance: the Oceanis 52 has not changed significantly from its predecessor, the Oceanis 51.1. The Finot-Conq design office has given the very sharply defined chines (chine edges) and, above all, the tulip-shaped bow much rounder and less aggressive lines. The yacht is therefore much closer in design to BENETEAU's large flagships, the Oceanis 54 and 60 yachts, with its more elegant overall appearance. Another notable shift in the company’s approach is the move away from marketing itself as the ‘avant-garde in boating’– a slogan it upheld until 2024. Now, the shipyard's yachts are ‘designed to be remarkable’. In our opinion, the new Oceanis 52 embodies this philosophy: its more universally appealing design makes it attractive to a broader audience.
The manufacturing methods used on the Atlantic coast remain unchanged. Like most large-production yachts in this class, the Oceanis 52 is no longer solidly laminated by hand - instead, a modern vacuum infusion process is used for weight savings. The outer hull shell is solid around the bottom, while balsa wood is used as the sandwich core in other areas. The structural inner shell, which is bonded in place, is also manufactured using vacuum infusion. This construction keeps the finished yacht’s weight just under 14.5 tonnes – a good figure for a 50-foot yacht. By way of comparison, the Hanse 510 displaces 16.5 tonnes and the Bavaria C50 weighs in at 15.4 tonnes. Clearly, the team at Saint Gilles has preserved its commitment to sailing performance.
Limiting yourself to what works: the cabin layouts of the Oceanis 52
The sales figures probably clearly showed this, as the shipyard now only offers two cabin layout options for sale. Whereas other manufacturers and even the previous model offered more options, especially when it came to shower rooms, the Oceanis 52 is now only available as a three-cabin model with two shower rooms or a five-cabin model with three shower rooms. The five-cabin variant is clearly only suitable for very large families or charter use, where the Oceanis 52 is expected to live up to the legacy of its predecessor, which was highly successful in this segment.
In terms of cabin layout, for private buyers there is no other option for sale than the three-cabin model with two bathrooms. We don’t think this is a significant disadvantage.
The versatile sail plan of the Oceanis 52: from leisurely charter sailing to a trip around the world
You can comfortably tackle even the longest passages with a 15-metre yacht. The Oceanis series has earned its reputation as the world’s most successful cruising yachts - both in units sold and miles sailed - thanks in large part to the enduring popularity of the classic 50 Clipper and 15-metre Oceanis models. Many of these yachts, including centre cockpit variants, remain sought-after as well-maintained owner’s boats on the second-hand market. To meet buyer requirements, the shipyard offers the new Oceanis 52 for sale with two keel options as usual, which can be paired with three different rigging options. The standard draught is 2.36 metres, but a short keel version is available that reduces draught to 1.92 metres and adds approximately 300 kg to the keel weight. In terms of sails, the standard boat is for sale with a furling mainsail and a self-tacking jib.
The 94 m² sail area is preferred for charter operations due to its ease of handling, but the real fun begins when you equip the yacht with a fully battened mainsail and a 105% genoa, expanding the sail area to 127 m². With this setup, the yacht becomes noticeably more responsive, accelerating even in light to moderate winds. For optimal performance in light wind conditions, the gennaker package, consisting of a bowsprit and sheet winches, is essential for deploying either the 143 m² Code 0 or the mighty 187 m² gennaker. Those who want to ‘shift up a gear’ can buy the yacht’s First Line equipment. This upgrade features a mast that is 1.8 metres higher, powering high-quality cruising laminate sails with a total upwind sail area of 143 m². You can then be sure to sail around the world at a brisk pace.
It’s still there, the mainsheet arch!
If you’re considering an Oceanis 52 for sale, it’s well worth opting for the version with a mainsheet arch. This makes it much easier to attach the large sprayhood and bimini as you only have to close two zips, eliminating the hassle of dealing with multiple straps. This means that both components are securely connected to the arch, providing reliable protection against wind and rain, and making them less vulnerable to strong gusts of wind.
Anyone who opts for the battened mainsail will also appreciate the arch when packing away the sail in the marina. It also provides a secure handhold when sailing in rough conditions. Because the mainsheet traveller’s attachment point on the boom is positioned significantly further aft than on the version without the targa bar, the loads on the pulleys, sheet, structure and winches are all reduced. On the other hand, many sailors like the clean, flat lines of the Oceanis without the arch, which, especially with the slightly rounder design of the Oceanis 52, is considered more attractive. Ultimately, the decision comes down to your personal preference.
“The new Oceanis 52 is a truly stylish, elegant yacht: it matches the strengths of the 51.1, but offers a significant boost in holiday suitability and luxury.”Oceanis 52 for sale – all the information you need as a buyer
Which type of sailor is the new Oceanis 52 ideally suited to?
Setting exact requirements for yachts for sale of this size can be challenging, primarily because these boats are suitable for so many potential uses. If you typically plan to sail with three or more people, a 50-foot yacht is a good choice, particularly if you frequently sail on offshore passages away from the coast and the Oceanis 52 offers a very stable and robust sailing platform for this purpose. If you’re a couple with two children (each with their own cabin), or sailing with friends or extended family, it’s advisable not to consider anything smaller than 45 feet. The Oceanis 52 is also worth considering by traditional circumnavigators or those planning Atlantic crossings. The guest cabin on the port side can be cleared out and repurposed as a storage or utility room, leaving the starboard cabin as a full guest suite with its own en-suite shower room. Meanwhile, you can enjoy all the luxury and space of the owner’s suite in the fore cabin – a feature we will discuss in more detail later.
The Oceanis 52 is fully seaworthy and can be confidently sailed single-handed. For optimal ease of sailing, it’s recommended to equip the yacht with at least two electric winches. Unfortunately the manufacturer does not offer a stern thruster as standard, but an experienced boat builder can retrofit one without difficulty. This would make manoeuvring this large yacht - which does come with a bow thruster (tunnel) as standard - much easier. The Oceanis 52 is perfect for holidays – and really good at it! But the yacht still wants to be sailed as the original Oceanis genes simply cannot be bred out of a genuine Oceanis. And that’s a good thing!
Oceanis 52 for sale for the perfect sailing holiday: comfort is a top priority
As we will discuss later, the cockpit of the new Oceanis 52 is 30% larger than that of the Oceanis 51.1. This has been achieved mainly by arranging the cockpit seating area in a diamond shape – a rhombus. The popular central cockpit table of the old 51.1 has been replaced by two retractable tables. However, these are very stylish and can be used both as coffee tables and, when folded out, transform into full-size dining tables. A large central aisle remains unobstructed at all times, which makes it very easy to move around on board, even when the boat has a full crew. Additionally, the tables can be lowered to seat height and converted into huge lounging areas with comfortable upholstered cushions. Compared to the ‘old’ Oceanis 51.1, this is a significant enhancement which your guests are sure to appreciate. The sunbathing zones on either side of the companionway have also gained extra width, and the overall layout is complemented by the addition of inviting sun lounges on the foredeck.
If you’re seeking even greater luxury, the rear section, which is otherwise almost completely open across the entire width, can be closed off with benches between the helmsman’s seats. This option not only increases the seating area, but also includes a plancha grill and an additional refrigerator. We believe this option will be attractive to both charter operators and owners who value genuine long-distance cruising comfort.
Oceanis 52 for sale - a racy cruising yacht, also suitable for single-handed sailing!
While enjoying all the holiday comforts, sailing performance remains a priority: as helmsman, you can steer the yacht entirely from the aft position, as all halyards, sheets, stretchers, and reefing lines are led to the rear winches. The winch arrangement has been updated compared to the 51.1 with working winches now positioned closer to the rear guest area, enabling crew members to assist more easily. At the same time, you still have the option to operate all lines directly from the aft genoa winches at the helm. A positive: the increased space between the cockpit benches and steering consoles is an improvement which helps prevent accidental contact with the wheel when moving around. This extra room is used to create a step up to the side deck, making it much easier to move forward from both the cockpit and the helm. In our view, this is a smart design choice that enhances communication and certainly makes the boat easier to sail – both alone or with a crew.
No dinghy garage on board the Oceanis 52?
BENETEAU maintains a clear policy when it comes to dinghy garages: in the cruising yacht segment, the shipyard only considers garages to be practical onboard yachts of around 55 feet and above. Experience from other manufacturers has shown that installing dinghy garages in smaller yachts not only compromises space in the aft cabins but they are still too small for standard dinghies. As a result, the Oceanis 52 is deliberately designed without a garage and instead offers optional telescopic davits for sale. These work quite well, but they are not the ultimate solution. They may be practical when underway, but when mooring in the marina, the dinghy has to be removed and is likely to end up upside down on the foredeck again. For sailors who use their dinghy frequently, a custom storage solution is certainly better.
BENETEAU Oceanis 52 for sale – comfort below deck
Greater use of real wood, premium materials, enhanced textures
Over the past 15 years, BENETEAU’s Oceanis yachts have earned a reputation as genuine sailing vessels. However, when it comes to luxury and interior design, competitors – above all Bavaria, with its virtually flawless furniture fittings for production boats, have set the benchmark. Annoying weak points with BENETEAU which are important to note if you’re considering an Oceanis 51.1 for sale, (or any used sixth and seventh generation models) include the edge banding and trim, painted surfaces (especially door jambs), the steps and the floorboards.
Anyone stepping on board the Oceanis 52 will immediately notice the transformation: BENETEAU has made significant investments to address these persistent failures. The moulded or laminated square timbers, manufactured using the complex 'moule boulé' high-end interior construction technique, speak for themselves and you can now expect a noticeably heavier, more robust and higher quality product.
The ALPI veneers have been upgraded to a thickness of more than 2.5 mm in certain areas, eliminating the persistent issues of peeling and warping at the edges. The shipyard has also introduced solid companionway steps and significantly more rounded square timbers. These improvements are complemented by elegant, marbled Corian surfaces in the galley and shower rooms, along with a refreshed selection of upholstery fabrics for the wall panels and bulkheads.
Closer to the Oceanis yacht than to the Oceanis
This quality offensive is certainly motivated by the results of sales surveys and the painful loss of many customers to Bavaria, which, in our view, offers the best interior design of all large-series yachts. Customers have also been lost to Hanse Yachts, whose latest generation of cruising yachts for sale now features a distinctly ‘French’ style combined with Italian elegance. The investment has paid off. Following the material and quality offensive, the new Oceanis 52 is now much closer to the shipyard's flagship models than to its smaller cruising sisters. As a result, many prospective Oceanis 54 yacht buyers will certainly have a difficult decision to make between these two boats. This is especially true since, as previously mentioned, prices have not increased despite the higher-quality trim levels and the comprehensive packages now included in the base price.
Highlight - the owner’s cabin on board the Oceanis 52 sets new standards
Starting with the Oceanis 47 (or when buying its older predecessor the Oceanis 46.1), BENETEAU has improved the owner’s cabins which are now much more comfortable. Thanks to the tulip shape hull design, where the bilge edges extend forward at the bow, the interior volume is now huge and has been skillfully utilised by the designers. The large island bed on the new Oceanis 52 measures 2.05 m x 1.63 m, and the headboard with its stylish inlays and quilted bulkhead adds a touch of luxury. Behind this, a large sail locker is installed as standard, but there is also the option to configure a forward skipper’s cabin with its own shower room here.
Large bow windows in the hull flood the cabin with natural light and their generous size and low placement offer a great view even when lying down. This sets the Oceanis 52 apart, as other manufacturers often position their windows too high. The shower room facilities are separated, with the toilet located on the port side and the shower on the starboard. Both spaces are fully equipped and more than adequate in size. If the cockpit hasn’t already won you over, the owner’s suite below deck surely will: the space, light, storage space, and design are truly impressive.
Great galley in a harmonious saloon
When BENETEAU launched the seventh generation Oceanis at Cannes Yachting Festival in 2017, the first model available for sale was in the 50-foot class; now, nine years later, the Oceanis 52 is causing a sensation. Just as before, the exceptionally wide and cleverly designed saloon remains a focal point for both the trade press and visitors. Fortunately, the team at Nauta Design has preserved much of what made its predecessor successful: apart from the new materials and the improvements to the build quality of the furniture and fittings, the layout has remained essentially the same, especially in the three-cabin ‘owner’s boat’ model.
The L-shaped galley on the port side now incorporates some design elements taken from the larger Oceanis yachts. Notably, the ‘Captain’s Corner’ has been repositioned to face away from the direction of travel, a plus for communication on board. The chaise lounge has been retained, serving as a navigation seat, a small settee, and a favourite spot for the skipper. Across from this, adjacent to the day and guest shower room, is a spacious U-shaped seating area centred around a large table. What stands out here are the exceptionally thick, and therefore very comfortable cushions.
Summary and conclusion
Is the Oceanis 52 for sale the yacht for me?
Among yachts under 15 metres for sale, the Oceanis 52 is currently one of the most interesting choices. This is not only due to its introductory pricing - which may be a temporary advantage - but also because even the standard model already includes most of the equipment options. The yacht has become especially appealing to those seeking a holiday-oriented experience, thanks to significant improvements in the interior build quality and an enlarged, more usable outdoor area. However, the boat will certainly continue to uphold the excellent reputation of the rest of the series as a powerful and capable cruising yacht.
Impact on the used boat market in the 15-metre segment
The Oceanis 52 is still too new to have a presence on the used boat market. However, its launch is likely to have an impact on the purchase price of its predecessor, the Oceanis 51.1. With the initial price for a new Oceanis 52 being so attractive, the price of young, used Oceanis 51.1 yachts will suffer, especially since the noticeable deficits in the furnishings of the Oceanis 51.1 and the much more appealing cockpit of the Oceanis 52 are strong arguments for price reductions on boats for sale. This means that buyers looking for a bargain on a used boat for sale have a good chance, as owners of the 51.1, even those with relatively new and typically value-stable yachts, will likely have to make some concessions.
Oceanis 52 for sale – what we particularly like:
- Much better quality furniture and interior fittings.
- Spacious, comfortable cockpit, excellent for socialising – even with lots of guests.
- A more elegant, fluid exterior design than its predecessor.
Oceanis 52 for sale – here’s what you should look out for:
- As it is still brand new, production of the first serial numbers may not yet be fully up to speed.
- Furthermore, the standard sails (Dacron) are not very high quality, nor is the running rigging.
- The telescopic davits for dinghies are not a good long-term solution.
