A brilliant concept from Seascape

Kristian Hajnšek and Andraž Mihelin, founders of the Seascape shipyard, introduced the Seascape 18 as the yard's first boat in 2008. At the time it was impossible to predict how popular the boat would become. Yet today, more than 18 years later, the boat still continues to perform strongly against other sailing dinghies of its size. There is a strong German class association and the fast keelboat - renamed the First 18 SE in 2018 - continues to enjoy strong sales figures. Entire fleets of this type of boat regularly compete in regattas such as the Silverrudder or the Jabuka Race in the Mediterranean. What has contributed to the enduring success of this boat over the years and what makes it so highly regarded among sailors looking for a boat for sale?

The concept of the First 18 SE: fast, simple and robust!

The First 18 SE is a keelboat featuring a retractable swing keel. It has a large open cockpit and a small cabin in the forepeak which has a mattress to provide overnight accommodation - sea camping - for an adult. The boat measures 5.55 m by 2.38 metres in length and weighs just 500 kg. The boat is designed to be easily trailable enabling it to be transported very easily from regatta to regatta or to different sailing areas. The lightweight carbon rig (for sale as standard with the First 18 SE) can be set up by two experienced people in just a few minutes. The boat is easy to launch and is therefore ideal for sailors who want to get out on the water quickly and easily.

The robust construction of the hull (vacuum-infused hand-laid sandwich construction) makes the First 18 SE ideal for tough regatta use as the strong laminate can withstand race course collisions. The boat is designed for beaching or grounding with its lifting keel, while the twin, transom-mounted rudders can be lifted or removed to avoid any structural damage. With nearly 25 square metres of sail area — a North Sails laminate sail is standard — the lightweight carbon rig delivers impressive efficiency. The First 18 SE is renowned for its rapid planing and remarkable agility, thanks to its twin rudders. Individual owners together with sailing clubs members and experienced regatta competitors value its outstanding performance capabilities and the solid, high-quality construction. The First 18 SE can be used as a touring dinghy as well as a fast club and training boat or racing dinghy. Due to the high sales figures from the shipyard and the long production run of this boat, there are many used First 18 SEs available for sale. Bearing in mind the relatively high purchase price of a new boat, anyone looking to buy a First 18 SE will be able to find an advantageous offer on a used boat for sale. But be aware that many of the older used First 18s may have suffered significant wear and tear after years of intense racing and may have been repaired. The hulls may also have lost their structural stiffness. For this reason, it's essential to carefully inspect any used boat before purchasing a used boat for sale.

Seascape becomes First: BENETEAU takes over the shipyard

When the world’s largest yacht builder recognised that it had overlooked the latest developments in small boat technology for years if not decades, and had failed to advance its own performance brand 'First', it took decisive action, acquiring a majority stake in the Slovenian shipyard Seascape. This strategic move revitalised BENETEAU's presence in the performance market overnight and laid the foundation for a new era of innovative, high-quality yachts.

Since 2018, the close partnership between BENETEAU and Seascape has enabled the rapid introduction of small, efficient, and high-quality boats to the market. Additionally, this collaboration has ensured the continuation of the classic ‘First’ series. The First 18 SE was one of the first Slovenian manufactured boats to be sold under the BENETEAU brand and, after some initial grumbling from the die-hard Seascape community, became - and remains - one of the boatbuilder's bestsellers. Despite carrying the BENETEAU and First branding, it remains a genuine Seascape: built in Slovenia, delivered from Slovenia. Unlike her sisters, the First 14, First 24 and First 27, as well as the completely newly developed larger planing cruisers, the First 30 and First 36, the First 18 SE is only available in the Seascape Edition. The boat stands on its own merits and is not designed with a budget or lesser alternative; the vision of the Seascape creators to build an innovative, agile boat has been fully realised. With a complete on the water purchase price (including trailer, outboard motor, antifouling, etc.), for a well-equipped First 18 SE can easily reach 40,000 to 50,000 euros so it's perhaps not the most economical option, but nevertheless, we think it’s worth buying.

BENETEAU First 18 SE for sale - hull, construction, design and sail plan

Robustly built, regatta-ready and high-performance

Unlike all other First boats produced in Slovenia, the First 18 SE hulls are manufactured using a traditional hand laying-up method. The GRP mats are reinforced with polyester and vinyl ester resin. While this may appear anachronistic, this design choice is deliberate. The resulting hull is thicker with a more robust laminate than the majority of 18-foot boats from other brands. This means the First 18 SE is well-equipped to handle both the occasional bump at a race starting line or accidental contact with sandy shores meaning repair costs are kept low.

The full carbon rig is for sale with high-quality Ronstan fittings with Robline control lines. Some models were also fitted with Gottifredi Maffioli ropes. North Sails manufactures the sails as OEM versions. The laminate sails are of high- regatta quality, although they may not reach the standards of custom loft sails, they remain an affordable choice.

The iron keel is central to the boat’s stability and is operated via a crank that raises or lowers it directly within the centreboard box. A GRP bolt secures the keel, preventing it from lifting in the event of a capsize, but is designed to shear off during a collision with the ground or rocks, allowing the keel to retract safely. The standard configuration includes a 125 kg keel, resulting in a draught of 1.5 metres. Alternatively, buyers can opt for a shorter, 145 kg keel version, which reduces the draught to just 1.1 metres. The keel box is a weak point of the boat - you should take a close look here, especially if you have found an interesting used First 18 SE for sale. When considering a used First 18 SE, it’s important to pay special attention to the keel box, as this area is a known weak point. Dealers or previous owners may sometimes neglect to apply antifouling or, more critically, epoxy paint inside the keel box. If water penetrates the polyester laminate, over time, it can cause the laminate to soften or even lead to osmosis. With the keel box being constantly submerged, when buying a new boat, it’s advisable to insist that the dealer thoroughly treats the box with epoxy and antifouling.

Once assembled, the First 18 SE is a true high-performance boat — delivering exhilarating speed, rapid planing, and the ability to outpace larger boats on the water. More on this later.

High-strength and lightweight carbon fibre and high-performance North Sails laminate sails

The hallmark of the First 18 SE is its advanced and beautifully engineered full carbon rig, featuring a one-piece mast and boom which supports the high-performance laminate sails from North Sails with their sail area of 15.6 m² for the main and 9 m² for the jib. An impressive gennaker with its powerful sail area of 32 to 35 m² is hoisted from a snuffer on a retractable carbon bowsprit. These specifications perfectly embody designer Sam Manuard’s vision: a lightweight, straightforward sailing boat that prioritises ease of handling and pure sailing enjoyment, free from unnecessary complexity.

During regattas, the plug-in bulkhead is swapped for a neoprene cover which shields the cockpit from splashing water and can even withstand the additional water pressure from a capsize. Whether sailed solo or with a crew of two, the twin rudders help the First 18 SE to provide a lively experience, achieving impressive — and sometimes thrilling — planing speeds. The boat has inspired a global following: daysailers, families, retirees, and regatta enthusiasts alike all value its uncompromising simplicity and ingenious design, which keeps the focus squarely on pure sailing enjoyment.

First 18 SE for sale - rigging, launching and handling: Easy!

At just 5.55 m long and less than 500 kilograms, the First 18 SE is easy to transport making it ideal for anyone looking for a lightweight sailboat for sale. The matching trailer by Harbeck - renowned for its expertise with First and Seascape boats — makes launching the boat very easy with the First 18 SE floating quickly and effortlessly. The 7.4-metre mast can be raised and adjusted in just a few minutes by experienced sailors. Owners quickly develop efficient routines for rigging and unrigging, ensuring the First 18 SE is ready for use very quickly. A wide range of covers are available for sale for storing the boat on the water or ashore, making it possible to store the boat safely and protected from the elements on a buoy or jetty, as well as on a trailer ashore whether the rig is attached or not.

All the equipment aboard the First 18 SE is designed for simplicity and durability, so if there is damage it can be swiftly repaired or components replaced quickly and efficiently. When underway, the boat truly shines: its streamlined running rigging allows sailors to achieve optimum sail trim using only a few lines. This makes the First 18 SE well-suited for solo sailing and an excellent choice for those new to the sport.

The First 18 SE likes the sea just as much as lakes

The First 18 SE is CE certified as a C4 category, making it suitable for coastal sailing with up to four people on board. We know from dealers who have the First 18 SE for sale that most owners prefer to sail alone or in pairs, however, there are accounts of families with children enjoying excursions in the Baltic Sea or the Adriatic Sea in groups of four. The First 18 SE, designed as a true planing boat, excels in offshore winds and flat water, however it has been designed to handle a few knots of TWS before needing to be reefed. When sailing in waves, skilled helmsmanship is required, because of course an 18-foot hull cannot ride a sea wave as confidently as much larger hulls can. Nevertheless, as a quick YouTube search will show, a First 18 SE is very capable of handling stormy and choppy conditions while maintaining speed and control.

Each year, the Silverrudder—the world’s largest single-handed regatta—sees a strong turnout of First 18 SE boats, which consistently perform impressively, even when competing against larger and more luxurious yachts. In Germany, the First 18 SE community is supported by a vibrant and welcoming class association that actively encourages new members. Meanwhile, the Adriatic region, particularly Slovenia with its enthusiastic sailing culture, leads the way in Europe by hosting exciting events like the Jabuka Race, which may be of particular interest to sailing enthusiasts.

Are you a sailing ascetic? Then the First 18 SE is something for you.

Even tall adults can comfortably sleep in the compact foredeck cabin — a major advantage of the First 18 SE compared to similar regatta boats such as the J/88. Many sailing couples and smaller families have successfully used the First 18 SE as a micro-cruiser. You can find a variety of customised cockpit cushions and overboom covers available for purchase online, which can be used to convert the spacious cockpit into a sheltered sleeping area. While this setup is best suited for summer, it does provide enough space for up to four people to stay on board.

The First 18 SE excels when sailed single-handedly, with its design focused on making both sailing and all pre- and post-trip activities as straightforward as possible. If you’re seeking a bit more room and comfort, consider the First 24 or First 24 SE — these models are purpose-built as micro cruisers delivering impressive sailing performance. It might be worthwhile to explore these sailboats as well if you’re browsing for options.

Carsten Rettig “The First 18 SE is THE classic in the First/Seascape portfolio. Even after 15 years, Manuard’s stroke of genius remains one of the most powerful and versatile sailboats in the 18-foot segment.”

BENETEAU First 18 SE for sale - all the information needed for skippers/sailors

A First 18 SE for everyone

Unlike other boats that are designed with a single, well-defined purpose — making it easy to decide whether they suit your needs - the First 18 SE refuses to be pigeonholed. This philosophy was at the heart of the original Seascape brand: after their experience in the Mini-Transat, shipyard founders Andraž Mihelin and Kristian Hajnšek set out to design boats that were simple, fast, and stylish. Their goal was to restore the pure enjoyment of sailing by eliminating anything that might distract from or complicate the experience.

The First 18 SE was the first Seascape model for sale, perfectly reflecting this approach. Designed in collaboration with renowned IMOCA racing yacht designer Sam Manuard, the First 18 SE combines excitement and performance. The First 18 SE adapts to your needs as a buyer - whether you're seeking a straightforward cruising boat, a family-friendly dinghy for learning to sail with the children or a high-performance racer for events such as the Silverrudder or Eiserne on Lake Constance. Over the years, many owners have customised their boats with various interior and exterior enhancements ranging from new deck coverings to single-burner stoves or cool boxes. This remarkable, versatile boat continues to be popular in today’s highly competitive sailing boat market - and it's even more impressive that the boat remains in production!

The First 18 SE for sale on the used boat market

While the exact number of First 18s produced remains uncertain, the latest hull numbers suggest more than 800 units have been sold - a truely impressive number! This also means that a relatively large choice of used First 18 SEs are available for sale. The price for a fully equipped new First 18 SE is justified, but can still seem quite high, which makes second-hand models for sale particularly attractive for novices. When ssearching for a used sailboat for sale, prioritise boats that have not been regularly used in sailing regattas. Boats that are raced regularly may have had hull damage - sometimes only partially repaired - along with over-loaded rigs and hulls that have lost their stiffness.

While accessories such as additional equipment, covers etc. can easily be bought new, the boat's core structure cannot be replaced. If you have found a used First 18 SE for sale, thoroughly inspect the hull, paying close attention to the sides, the underside and the area around where the mast is mounted on the deck. Since this spot on the boat is not directly supported, the forces from the mast are absorbed via cabin roof's GRP structure and this is often the first area to show signs of stress in overused boats. Additionally, examine the keel box carefully as it is a known weak area in a pre-owned vessel which should be protected with epoxy and antifouling.

Summary and conclusion

Is the First 18 SE for sale a boat for you?

If you want a straightforward boat that delivers both exceptional sailing enjoyment and practical benefits, the First 18 SE is certainly worth considering. Whether you're looking for an affordable second-hand dinghy for your children to practice sailing, a high-performance vessel for competitive regatta sailors, or a straightforward new boat for easy cruising, the First 18 SE adapts to every need. The boat provides a refined planing experience on the water, straight-forward handling, a quick and easy setup and low-maintenance design. Only the carbon rigging and the North Sails laminate sails should be treated with special care, the rest of the boat is similar to a VW Beetle: it runs, and runs, and runs…

First 18 SE for sale - what we particularly like:

  • A versatile boat concept from daysailing to all-out racing.
  • Simple handling without any frills.
  • Robust and durable - with top sailing performance!

First 18 SE for sale - you should carefully examine:

  • The centreboard box, which is open at the bottom and submerged, must be well protected with epoxy!
  • On older used boats, the area around the mast on the cabin roof may have lost its structural integrity.
  • The attachments for the twin rudders at the stern are a weak point and somewhat vulnerable to damage.
