Why J.K. Rowling's $150M Superyacht Showed Up in LA With Its Name Taped Over
When Oceanco's 89-meter Samsara docked in Marina del Rey on August 30 with a white tarp over its transom, it took locals about a week to identify the "worst-kept secret on the Marina": J.K. Rowling's yacht. Photo:(CB/Backgrid)
Headlines called it forced concealment. The real story is more of a case study in dockside privacy management.
What Happened
Sources told the California Post the nameplate was covered over concerns the vessel would draw protesters tied to Rowling's controversial public comments on trans issues.
Is Taping Over Names Standard Practice?
Not quite — but not rare either. Broker Chris Cecil-Wright told Fox News that taping over a name is unusual, reserved for owners expecting a specific flashpoint. The much more common move is killing the AIS transponder at anchor or in port so tracking apps can't pinpoint the boat. Either way, the goal is the same: for recognizable owners, a yacht is meant to function like a private island. The catch is physics — you can cover a name, but not a 290-foot white hull towering over the marina.
The Yacht
Builder: Oceanco, delivered 2015
Length: 89m / 292ft
Ownership: Built for Eric Smidt, sold to Brett Blundy (2022), acquired by Rowling (2023)
Capacity: 12 guests, 26 crew
Features: Circular pool, private cinema, beach club deck
Top speed: ~18.5 knots
The Bigger Picture
Spotter accounts and AIS-tracking apps have made total anonymity nearly impossible for high-profile owners in public marinas. Crews are increasingly managing exposure like publicists — deciding in advance what to cover, what to switch off, and what simply can't be hidden. The tarp over Samsara's name didn't work as camouflage, but as a signal of how seriously modern yacht crews take privacy, it landed.
