The most expensive private islands with their own marinas

Luxury begins when even your own marina is no longer enough. For some of the world’s wealthiest people, therefore, it is not just a superyacht that is part of their lifestyle, but an entire private island, complete with its own marina, helipad and exclusive villas. But who owns such islands, what makes them so special, and why is sustainability playing an increasingly important role even in the absolute luxury segment today?

Lanai – Larry Ellison’s sustainable dream island

One of the best-known examples is the Hawaiian island of Lanai, around 98 per cent of which was acquired by Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison in 2012. The purchase price was never officially disclosed, but media reports at the time estimated the value of the transaction at several hundred million US dollars. Lanai boasts Manele Harbour, a sheltered harbour that serves as an important base for yachts travelling between the Hawaiian islands. Since the takeover, Ellison has invested heavily in the island’s sustainable development. This includes projects in the fields of renewable energy, water management and modern agriculture, aimed at making Lanai more self-sufficient and environmentally friendly in the long term.

Necker Island – Richard Branson’s Caribbean retreat

Another prominent example is Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands, owned by entrepreneur Richard Branson. The island has been developed into an exclusive luxury resort and features private mooring facilities for yachts as well as its own jetty for tenders and supply boats. Following the devastating hurricanes of 2017, Necker Island was extensively rebuilt. In doing so, Branson’s group of companies placed greater emphasis on sustainable construction methods, renewable energy and measures to protect the sensitive coastal landscape.

Musha Cay – exclusivity in the Bahamas

Musha Cay in the Bahamas is also one of the world’s most exclusive private islands. The archipelago is owned by the illusionist David Copperfield and, according to the operators, comprises eleven islands with a total area of around 700 acres, which is equivalent to approximately 283 hectares. Musha Cay can only be hired in its entirety and is aimed at guests seeking the utmost privacy. Several jetties allow guests to arrive on their own yacht, whilst private aircraft can also reach the island with ease.

Sustainability is becoming the new luxury

Although private islands are primarily associated with luxury, the issue of sustainability is becoming increasingly important. Modern facilities utilise solar power, battery storage and seawater desalination plants to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels. Rainwater harvesting and energy-efficient buildings further help to make the island as self-sufficient as possible. At the same time, many owners take care to protect sensitive coastal areas and marine ecosystems, as these play a key role in determining the special value of their islands.

Why private islands with marinas are so sought-after

Private islands with their own marinas remain an absolute rarity worldwide and are among the most exclusive properties of all. Their value stems not only from their size, but above all from their location, a sheltered marina, high-quality infrastructure and the opportunity to combine luxury with sustainable concepts. As such, they are not only retreats for wealthy owners, but are increasingly serving as examples of how exclusive living and the responsible use of natural resources can go hand in hand.
