Captain Intentionally Crashes Yacht Into Sea Wall to Avoid Greater Damage
A yacht captain in Marina del Rey, Los Angeles, intentionally crashed his yacht into a sea wall after suffering a mechanical failure — and authorities say it was the right call.
According to Lt. N. Guskos of the Marina del Rey Sheriff’s Station, the skipper made a split-second decision to steer the mid-size yacht into the wall near Fisherman’s Village off Fiji Way around 3 p.m., preventing what could have been a much more dangerous situation.
“The captain did the smart thing,” Guskos told City News Service, explaining that a malfunction had left the yacht uncontrollable. “He intentionally hit the wall to avoid injuries or greater damage.”
Video from nearby restaurants showed stunned diners watching as the yacht collided with the sea wall. The bow of the vessel took most of the impact, while the wall sustained only minor damage.
No injuries were reported.
