The World’s First Hydrogen-Powered Superyacht Claimed to Be for Sale
Feadship’s groundbreaking Project 821, also known as Breakthrough — widely reported to be owned by Bill Gates — is said to be for sale, despite the tech billionaire never having set foot onboard.
According to recent reports, Gates is preparing to part with the $645 million hydrogen-powered superyacht, and Canadian billionaire Patrick Dovigi is rumored to be the prospective buyer.
Designed by RWD and built by Feadship over five years, Breakthrough made global headlines as the world’s first hydrogen fuel cell-powered superyacht. The vessel runs on zero-emission hydrogen fuel cells that supply power for the yacht’s hotel load — everything from air conditioning and lighting to pools and jacuzzis — which represents nearly 78% of a yacht’s energy use. When hydrogen isn’t available, biofuel-powered generators step in, cutting emissions by up to 90%.
Onboard, Breakthrough boasts 12 guest staterooms, two staff cabins, accommodation for 44 crew members, and a private owner’s deck with two bedrooms, two offices, and 14 slide-out balconies. Among its standout features are a cinema, library, moveable glass-bottomed pool, hot tubs, steam room, gym, and even a fully equipped hospital.
Beyond its impressive amenities, Breakthrough is also a leap forward in green technology, equipped with the most advanced waste heat recovery system ever fitted to a superyacht and a Smart AC system that reduces power in unoccupied spaces.
The innovations developed for Project 821 are already influencing future projects, including Norwegian hydrogen-powered ferries launching in 2025.
