The Yacht Guy Alex Jimenez Shares His Top Tips for Social Media Success

Below, you’ll find a quick interview with The Yacht Guy, Alex Jimenez, recorded during coffee breaks at this year’s Superyacht Summit Türkiye.

I met Alex Jimenez at the summit, and he was undoubtedly one of the most engaging panelists of the event. In a yachting media landscape crowded with channels, blogs, and YouTubers, it’s no small feat to stand out - and Alex has done just that. That’s why I was eager to hear his story firsthand.

His journey is truly extraordinary - like something straight out of a movie, but entirely real. He shared how it all began:

“Yes, back in 1998, I was homeless. During that time, I started reading magazines about yachts. I told myself, ‘One day, I’m going to be on a yacht. I’m not going to be homeless forever.’ And I stuck to that vision. I ended up working in yachting for 11 years. Then in 2014, I decided to make ‘The Yacht Guy’ my full-time career.”

When I asked how social media played a role, he explained:

“Instagram launched in 2010, and I started an account early on. It gained a lot of attention, and that’s when I realized I could turn this into something big. Before that, I was a truck driver. But once my account took off, I made the switch and became ‘The Yacht Guy’ full time. It’s been my career ever since 2014.”

Curious about his approach to building a YouTube audience, I asked what it takes to grow a channel. His answer was refreshingly simple - and powerful:

“Absolutely - be yourself. Authenticity wins every time. When I first started, I tried to be like David Seal - very detailed and intellectual about yachts. But my producer told me, ‘People want to see you - not an imitation.’ So I dropped the act and just showed up as myself. That’s when everything changed. My best advice to anyone starting on social media is: be original, be authentic, and let your personality shine.”

Alex Jimenez is more than just “The Yacht Guy”—he’s a testament to how authenticity, resilience, and passion can fuel incredible success. Time was limited at the summit, and I only managed to speak with him during coffee breaks - but I’m looking forward to asking him even more next time.
