One Boat Capsized So Far During Hurricane Melissa
As Hurricane Melissa continues to pound the Caribbean with destructive winds and torrential rain, at least one boat has reportedly capsized amid dangerous sea conditions. Boaters take precautions as the powerful storm lashes the Caribbean.
Hurricane Melissa, with sustained winds of 160 mph, has brought life-threatening conditions to Jamaica and surrounding waters, forcing marinas to close and most vessels to seek shelter.
Precautions taken by boaters
Before the storm hit, boat owners across the region took emergency measures, including:
- Moving vessels into sheltered marinas or hauling them ashore
- Doubling mooring lines and securing loose equipment
- Removing sails, canvas, and electronics to minimize wind damage
- Checking bilge pumps and fuel levels to ensure readiness
- Relocating crew and passengers to safe onshore shelters
Authorities are urging all remaining vessels at sea to stay clear of the hurricane’s path and follow Coast Guard updates closely.
