Mystery Yacht Off North Captiva Island Has Everyone Talking

Is it Jeff Bezos? Bill Gates? Steven Spielberg? Or Shahid “Shad” Khan—the possible owner of a mystery yacht off North Captiva Island? "Source of the photo and news: Naples Daily News and Fort Myers News-Press, reporting by Dave Osborn, December 29–30, 2025."

A large luxury yacht anchored off North Captiva Island, Florida, in late December sparked widespread curiosity, speculation, and humor - particularly on social media, where locals and visitors alike tried to guess who owns the vessel. Such speculation is nothing new for the area, as the island is well known for attracting high-profile visitors and luxury yachts year-round.

The discussion began on December 29, when Jennie Battel of New Jersey shared a photo of the yacht in the Sanibel & Captiva Island public Facebook group, which has more than 187,000 followers. Her simple question—“Anybody know about this yacht off the coast of North Captiva?”—quickly gained traction.

By early December 30, the post had drawn more than 1,100 reactions, over 1,300 comments, and dozens of shares.

One of the most common guesses was Shahid “Shad” Khan, owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars and the richest person in Naples and Southwest Florida.

Others speculated the yacht could belong to auto racing magnate Roger Penske, while additional guesses ranged from Tiger Woods and a former prime minister of Qatar to former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, who frequently vacations on nearby Sanibel Island.

Captiva Island, along with neighboring North Captiva, is known for its seclusion and exclusivity. Accessible primarily by boat or small aircraft, the islands offer a level of privacy rarely found elsewhere in Florida.

This isolation has long attracted celebrities, business leaders, and high-profile figures seeking a quiet retreat, making sightings of luxury yachts in the surrounding waters a familiar - and often closely watched - part of daily life.
