Durban wants to be Africa's first superyacht hub

Something big is brewing on South Africa's eastern coast. Durban, known as Africa's Miami, making a serious move to become Africa's dedicated superyacht hub.

Earlier this month, city officials travelled to Viareggio, Italy, for the prestigious YARE conference — the global gathering for superyacht refit and aftersales. There, they signed a Letter of Intent with Navigo, the organisation behind the YARE programme and a key player in superyacht destination development worldwide. It was a statement of intent on the world stage.

What's being planned?

A 24-hectare superyacht precinct inside the Port of Durban — Africa's largest commercial port — dedicated to refit, maintenance, and berthing. Over R1.9 billion in private investment has already been pledged to make it happen.
Beyond the marina, the city is also partnering with the Durban University of Technology to launch Africa's first Superyacht Academy, training locals in marine engineering, welding, and advanced composites.

Why Durban?
Its location on the Indian Ocean puts it directly in the path of global bluewater routes. Add in competitive costs compared to Mediterranean or Caribbean refit hubs, and the case becomes hard to ignore.

What's next?
This November, Durban will host the YARE Symposium — the first time the event has ever been held on African soil. Over 100 superyacht captains and 100 yacht manufacturers have been invited.
