AMF was founded in New York in 1900 as American Machine and Foundry, a manufacturer of industrial equipment for the tobacco industry. The company moved into the sport of bowling after World War II, when AMF automated bowling equipment and bowling centers became profitable business ventures.
During the late 1960s AMF expanded into other liesure based businesses including Hatteras, Slickcraft, and Crestliner power boats, as well as Alcort sailboats.
In 1985, a Minnesota-based company called Minstar, Inc. bought the company, recognized that bowling was its biggest strength and sold off most of the other divisions.
In 2009 the company was owned by a Chicago‑based private investment firm Code Hennessy and Simmons, LLC. and maintained its brand association with bowling.
AMF filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November 2012. It merged with Bowlmar and, along with Brunswick Corp., became Bowlmar AMF.

Founded by John Barnett, designer and first builder of the BUTTERFLY class scow. First located in Libertyville, IL and then Kenosha, WI. The company was sold to Hedlund Industies in 1972 and production was moved to Green Lake, WI.
In 2007, the assetts were purchased by Windward Boatworks of Middleton, WI.

Located in New Bedford MA, USA, the company was well known for building commerical fishing vessels, whale boats, and Cape Cod catboats. Later became one of the first fabricators in the US of industrial, corrosion resistant, FRP equipment. Carl N. Beetle was the inventor of glass fiber gel-coated boat molds and the catalyst spray gun.
The company was sold to Marscot Plastics which, in turn, became a division of American Boat Building Co..
