What was this engine designed for? This engine was developed for marine applications. It can be used to power a vessel or as the power source for a generator set, depending on the chosen configuration and the rest of the installation. The engine is equipped with a turbocharger with air-to-coolant aftercooling. It also features a high-pressure common-rail fuel system and a cylinder head with four valves per cylinder.
The stated emissions classifications are EPA Commercial Marine Tier 3 and IMO MARPOL Annex VI Tier II. RCD 2 is also mentioned. These classifications are technical designations relating to emissions and maritime regulations. Check for yourself whether this engine is suitable for the regulations and application you have in mind. Its final suitability also depends on the available components, controls, cooling system, exhaust system and the way in which it is installed.

Its width is approximately 864 millimetres and its height is approximately 964 millimetres. The stated dry weight is 578 kilograms, equivalent to approximately 1,274 pounds.
When planning transport or installation, it is advisable to allow for additional space around the engine. Consider access for lifting equipment, connections, hoses, cables and any additional equipment. The dimensions stated are the maximum physical dimensions according to the available specifications. Check during the viewing day whether the dimensions correspond to the space in which you intend to install the engine.
Is this a complete propulsion system? No, this lot concerns the separate engine only. Components that would normally form part of a complete marine installation, such as a marine gearbox, instrument panel, exhaust system, propeller shaft, propeller, fuel tank or additional wiring, are not included in the lot.
This means that you must carefully determine in advance which additional components are required. The installation, connection and commissioning should also be assessed by a qualified expert. The engine may be of interest for a replacement project, a technical installation or a newly built propulsion system, but its practical suitability depends on your project and the components available.
What should you check during the viewing day?During the viewing day, you can inspect the engine up close. Pay attention to the general condition of the engine block, connection points, flywheel housing, visible leaks, damage, corrosion and missing components.
The engine has an SAE 3 flywheel housing. Check whether this is compatible with the marine gearbox or generator you intend to use. Also inspect the accessibility of the fuel system, cooling connections and exhaust side. The viewing day is intended to allow you to assess the item itself. If desired, bring an expert or mechanic who can help you assess the technical possibilities.
Is this engine suitable for what you are looking for? Those searching for a boat to buy often find complete vessels with an engine already installed. This lot is different, as it concerns only a separate John Deere diesel engine. This engine is particularly relevant to someone who wants to replace an existing installation or assemble a technical project.
In this case, buying advice mainly concerns the installation dimensions, weight, required connections and compatibility with the rest of the installation. Also check in advance whether transport and lifting are within your capabilities. The John Deere PowerTech 4045AFM85 has clear technical specifications, but you must determine its suitability for your application yourself, based on the viewing day and the specifications of your own project.
