moody 40 pimrose with new potentialwhat kind of boat is the moody 40 pimrose?the moody 40 pimrose is a polyester sailing yacht from 1978, built by marine projects in plymouth. with a length of 12.04 metres, a beam of 4.04 metres and a draught of 1.67 metres, she has a spacious and sturdy appearance. the boat weighs approximately 8,222 kilograms and is steered with a wheel from the cockpit. her aluminium mast carries a mainsail, genoa, spinnaker and storm jib. the sail plan is in reasonable condition. according to the seller, the mainsail is still suitable for short trips, but replacement will likely be necessary in the future.
the moody has previously been used for day trips, weekend stays and liveaboard purposes. this gives her a versatile character, but she currently still requires finishing work before she can be used again as a comfortable cruiser. the boat is therefore particularly interesting for someone looking for a spacious hull and willing to invest time, attention and work in a new interior.
moody 40 pimrose is now available in the online auction. everyone can place a bid until 16 november 2026.
what is the current condition of the interior?the original interior has been completely removed. as a result, the current layout is not ready for use and a new interior still needs to be installed. this includes woodworking and further work on the twelve-volt electrical system. the initial preparations have already been carried out. part of the inside has been insulated, cleaned and painted as a basis for further finishing.
the specifications mention four fixed berths and two additional berths, but in practice these numbers should be regarded as the original or intended capacity. because most of the interior is missing, these berths are currently not directly available. there are, however, components on board that could be used in a future fit-out, including stainless-steel water tanks. there are three tanks, but they still need to be installed on board and connected.
the original accommodation included a shower, refrigerator, cooking appliance, mattresses, hot water and a manual toilet. the toilet discharge runs directly into open water. hot-air heating is also provided for. the water tank capacity is 409 litres and the fuel tank has a capacity of 204 litres.
what work has been carried out on the hull?an osmosis treatment was carried out on the hull in 2020. during this work, the hull below the waterline was completely stripped and partially reinforced with a new layer of glass fibre matting. according to the information provided, seventeen layers of hempel were then applied, with hempel silicone as the final layer. the topsides were treated with four layers of epifanes varnish paint and three layers of epifanes non-slip paint.
the last maintenance carried out out of the water took place in 2024. the antifouling was also applied that year. the owner states that there is currently no known osmosis or evidence of osmosis. the boat has been systematically worked on in recent years, but her current condition remains reasonable and significant work is still required before she can be fully used as a sailing yacht.
what is the condition of the engine and technical systems?the moody 40 pimrose has a single thornycroft diesel engine with serial number d 1030/108. according to the seller, the engine is operational and has been regularly maintained. the stated cruising speed is approximately 8 kilometres per hour. the propeller shaft still requires attention; its alignment should be checked.
the electrically operated bow thruster is reportedly working, but is currently disconnected because the control panel is missing. there are three batteries, a battery charger, an inverter and a shore-power connection on board. the 220-volt system was renewed in 2023 and 2024. a new victron inverter was also installed. the twelve-volt system still needs to be adapted to the interior that is yet to be built.
which navigation equipment is included?an extensive raymarine navigation package is included in the sale. this includes radar, gps, autopilot, vhf radio, chartplotter, depth sounder, ais, compass and speedometer. according to the information provided, the set has a value of approximately 10,000 euros. it is important to note that this equipment still needs to be installed and connected. you are therefore not buying a ready-to-use navigation system, but rather a collection of equipment with which the boat can be further equipped.
there is also an electric bilge pump, a manual anchor windlass, an anchor with chain, a bathing ladder, fenders and lines. the homemade sprayhood is made of pvc and is not original. a liferaft for offshore use is also present, but it must be inspected again before it can be used as safety equipment.
is this moody suitable for a new owner?this moody could suit someone looking for a spacious project boat with a sturdy polyester hull and a classic appearance. she offers generous beam, approximately two metres of headroom and ample space for a future interior. the combination of a diesel engine, sailing equipment and available navigation equipment gives her the potential for a new life on the water, but this is offset by the considerable finishing work required.
anyone looking to buy a second-hand boat without carrying out major work themselves will probably be better suited to another type of boat. for someone with experience in yacht joinery, electrical installations and technical maintenance, this boat could be particularly interesting. the work required on the interior is clearly visible and should be taken into account when assessing the boat and preparing your budget.
which boat-buying tips are important?when buying this moody, it is advisable to focus particularly on the remaining finishing work. during the viewing day, inspect the hull, paintwork, engine compartment, propeller shaft, mast step, rigging and the condition of the sails. also check which interior components are still present and how the new layout could be constructed. the included raymarine equipment should be assessed separately for completeness, operation and installation possibilities.
the documentation consists of the original onboard documentation and photographs of maintenance work carried out in recent years. these documents can help you understand the boat’s history more clearly. the viewing day is the opportunity to inspect her carefully, assess the condition of the work completed and determine whether the remaining investment fits your plans. the sale is taking place through boatauction.... hele teksten » mindre tekst
